I know how to beat FEAR!

I was speaking at an event in North Wales this weekend and the biggest question I was asked was “How do I get over the fear of Failure?”

Fear is a powerful emotion that can massively impact your business decisions. It shows up in lots of ways, often stopping us from reaching our full potential.

I have noticed that there are 3 main fears…

The first one is the fear of failure. Business owners hesitate to launch a new product or service, worrying it might not succeed. This fear can stifle innovation and growth, leaving potential opportunities untapped. For instance, a tech start-up might delay releasing a ground-breaking app, fearing negative feedback, only to see a competitor seize the opportunity.

The second fear is the fear of rejection. Sales people avoid reaching out to potential leads, worrying about being turned down. This fear can severely restrict business development and expansion. For example, an estate agent might avoid contacting a high-value client, fearing they will not be interested, thereby missing a lucrative deal.

The third is the Fear of criticism. Business owners may avoid making tough decisions to avoid potential backlash from their partners or employees. This fear can lead to stagnation, as businesses may stick to the status quo rather than pushing through necessary changes. You might avoid implementing a necessary restructuring plan, fearing it might upset employees, thereby stopping company growth.

How to Overcome Fear in Business

  1. Embrace Failure as Learning: Failure is the pre-requisite to growth. Viewing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a setback can stop the fear of failure. Encourage a culture that celebrates experimentation and learning from mistakes.
  2. Incremental Risk-Taking: Start with small, manageable risks to build confidence. Gradually, larger risks will seem more feasible.
  3. Support Systems: Having mentors, coaches, or an accountability group can provide encouragement and support you to overcome fear.
  4. Mindset Shifts: Learning to have a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities to grow, can reduce our fear.
